The Deep

Into the Earth, dig deep, dig deep.
There be treasures and gold to be found.
In the book it is written to be.

Throw the dirt and the rubbish into a heap.
Dig a hole twenty feet in the ground.
Into the Earth, dig deep, dig deep.

Though my family be poor and my wife she may weep,
our bellies will be full and be round.
In the book it is written to be.

I hear something below like a soft little weep,
but I mustn't be bothered by sound.
Into the Earth, dig deep, dig deep.

The chest below breaks and then with a sweep--
gaping jaws!--they swarm and abound.
In the book it was written to be.

I was never a man of superstitions to keep,
and now I am deep in the ground.
Inside the Earth, I'm deep, I'm deep,
and the book was made to bring me.
